One of the issues that many quilters seem to have before and after they’ve sewn their creation is the appearance of strings around the edges of the quilt. These strings can be very annoying to see, especially if during a pre-wash so many strings come off that they start to wrap around the edges of the quilting pieces and make an impenetrable web of string around the quilt fabric. The threads will very easily stretch and pull the fabric if they become too tangled and it’s absolutely vital to remove all of the loose strings that may be on the edges of the material before it’s placed into the dryer.
If pieces of quilt fabric are placed into the wash where strings start to come off and then the pieces are placed into the dryer without those strings being removed, it’s actually possible to harm the fabric pieces due to the stretching and straining that will occur of the material in the hot dryer. The best way to remove the strings without a significant amount of time and effort required is to cut around a half inch section of the fabric before they’re washed. Just a very small portion needs to be cut off and it’s actually possible to get a little less of a piece cut off and still be safe. Even though there will probably still be a bit of fraying in the washer, it won’t be nearly as bad as if the pieces were just tossed into the washer with no prepping.
